I feel more energised when I eat plant-based foods. In Yoga we talk about sattvic foods being the best to keep a clean bill of health. Sattvic means pure and unprocessed - so includes all primary plant foods which harness the power of the sun. When plants are then eaten by animals you lose that sun energy down the food chain, and increase wastage. I notice my digestion feels more sluggish when I eat meat, and so I tend to avoid this around exercise and diving.
I'd like to share with you my experiences with Plant Power. This week more about protein, then cherry and beetroot and lastly algae. Reading that back it doesn't sound particularly palatable does it?! Stick with me...
I've been greatly influenced by a number of top vegan athletes who've shared their nutritional experience online and in books. Whilst I don't want to let go of eggs and dairy and go fully vegan, I did find it fascinating that there are other options for protein supplements out there aside from the heaving shelves of whey you find in health food stores.
Why pea protein?
Because vegan powders are less processed and based on chlorophyll-containing plants, they are more alkaline than dairy supplements. Although I don't believe that eating alkaline food changes your body pH dramatically, because our body is already intelligent enough to adjust itself, I do think that we stress our body less by keeping what we ingest as close to normal pH as possible.
As a competitive diver I have to be sure that the supplements I take are of the highest quality and don't contain any athlete-prohibited ingredients. When you grab a tub or powder or pills from a shop shelf do you really know what you're ingesting? I took some time to find a manufacturer who produces clean and batch-tested protein powder so I could relax knowing that something hasn't crept into the formula when it shouldn't. Research shows that around a quarter of high-street protein brands in the US were contaminated with prohibited substances - not deliberately but often because the same factory is used to make other products.
